FEATURED POST on Operator Effectiveness

  • Human Factors in Process Plant Operation

Posted by: Alicia DuBay | Posted on: Aug 13, 2014
I was so excited to hear from our friend David Strobhar at Beville Engineering the other day that his new book called “Human Factors in Process Plant Operation” has been published. Dave Huffman and I have been working with Dave Strobhar for years at the Center for Operator Performance and Dave’s knowledge in this area is second to none. Needless to say I bought the book immediately and can’t wait for my next trip to Europe so I can read it on the plane.

  • A Culture of Safety

Posted by: Marc Leroux | Posted on: Sep 17, 2014
Although I work entirely in the manufacturing software domain, I’ve spent quite a bit of my career in industrial complexes. I’ve learned the importance of safety, how and why protective devices should be used, both from training inside ABB and from spending time in our customers facilities. The safety aspects are continually reinforced inside of ABB, with signs, email and regular, mandatory training...

  • Digital fieldbuses: the ultimate configurable I/O

Posted by: David Huffman | Posted on: Sep 11, 2014
There seems to be a lot of excitement in the marketplace around configurable I/O solutions that allegedly provide “significant” savings over traditional, all the same I/O type, card solutions for 4-20 mA instrumentation. I will admit that there are some benefits to be had, but are the big benefits really there for all project types (greenfield and brownfield), or is this a solution that mostly just covers up for poor or sloppy project management and practices??? More..

  • The Future of Industrial Internet of things (IIoT) Development

Posted by: Marc Leroux | Posted on: Sep 08, 2014
Like many other people, on weekends there are a lot of outdoor projects that need to be done. A few weeks ago I came in at lunch and mentioned that it felt like the humidity level was more than 90%. My wife promptly looked up the local weather on the web and told me “Nope, not even close. It’s less than 75%”. Since I had been the one outside, it got me thinking about getting an indoor/outdoor thermometer...

  • The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)

Posted by: Marc Leroux | Posted on: Sep 03, 2014
I was reading some on-line articles and I saw that the US based hardware store Home Depot has announced that they will have a $20USD light bulb that will plug into an ordinary socket and be controlled through an iOS or Android app. That means I’ll be able to turn it on or off without getting up, or even via the internet when I’m travelling...

Posted by: David Huffman | Posted on: Aug 27, 2014
I really appreciate it when others give me a reason to expand on the potential use of State Based Control (ISA106: Procedure Automation for Continuous Process Operations). Thanks this time goes to Ray White (Vice President and General Manager, Global Solutions, International) for providing recommendations to look at opportunities to increase safety using automation for events like...

We hear about data centers all the time these days, so I thought I would share a little information on the topic for our readers who might be curious about how automation technologies are used in data centers. This article was written by our colleague Eric Olson - Product Manager for ABB Decathlon Data Centers. Read more to learn how Data Center Information Management (DCIM) has become critical to business operations.

  • Why Manufacturing Software is Cool

Posted by: Marc Leroux | Posted on: Aug 19, 2014
I was talking to my nephew a month or so ago. He was busy playing Angry Birds on his phone, and he made the comment “I know you work in the software business, but wouldn’t it be cool to work for a company that makes things like this?” I thought about it. I work for a company that, among many other products, creates software used in manufacturing...
